7-Day Mental Diet

What I’ve been doing lately

For me, it almost seems as if the class hasn’t ended. Here’s why:

  • I have all these habits. When you’ve done something for months straight, you tend to keep doing them. Seeing as they’re really great habits (for example, doing what I say I’m going to do), it’s not such a bad thing.
  • I’m finding these great things to read that I overlooked before in the course. For example, this week I read Wallace Wattles’ book “The Science of Getting Rich”. Now, in week 22a, we watched/listened to the audiobook of this, but reading it in print for some reason impacted me much more. I think it’s a case of “when the student is ready, the teacher appears”, more than anything else.
  • Since I’m doing the Guide training, I still have webinars to go to and things to work on. But it’s much less intense than what we did in the 26 weeks.
  • I have made masterminds with people that I spent months with online, then got to meet in person and hang out with for a week or two! So I sort of know them, and it’s a lot of fun. I feel as if I have made friends.

So when I say that it doesn’t seem as if the class has ended, that’s a good thing! I really have enjoyed this, as tough a class as it’s been.

But what I’ve also been doing is working on my book series, more particularly, on my first novel in the series. It’s the next thing on my list to accomplish, and it’s with my editor right now (who doubles as my youngest son and has a real gift in this area), so I’m taking a break while he’s reading through it and making pages of notes (actually I don’t know how many notes, but he’s a tough customer!).

On my DMP, it’s coming out in December, and I have a boatload of things to do in the meantime. Right now, I’m taking an online course in film noir, so I can learn as much as I can about the genre and make my series really good.

So no one has asked me what the tree is about yet. That’s my tree buddy, and it is on my list of Hawaii stuff to talk about eventually. 🙂

I guess getting a lot of things done is good!

Anyway, you know the drill. If you want to know the next time I post something, you can fill out one of these forms, depending on what else you want along with it. I started off with the videos, but some people really like the mental diet. Whatever you’re cool with. But I happen to think the mental diet is a great way to get a head start on the course.

A wish that came true

During the MKMMA course, we had to write something called a DMP, or Definite Major Purpose: basically answering the question WHAT DO YOU WANT? Mine got sent back over and over because I wasn’t being very specific. But on the third draft (dated October 5, 2014) I wrote in there that I wanted to go to Hawaii in 2015.

I had wanted to visit Hawaii for most of my life, because I kept hearing about how awesome it was. But I really considered it more seriously than a passing fancy when on a visit to California (where we were from) my best friend Celia told me her son Tyree (who was going to school there) would be graduating in 2015 and would I like to come too?

And I was like GREAT! AWESOME!

But I didn’t seriously feel like I was going. I didn’t keep my word a lot those days.

There are a few things you might want to know:

We drove to California from Oklahoma back in 2013 because I was so paranoid of the TSA. I had publicly and actively boycotted flying, speaking out against what was going on, and I didn’t even know if I was on some list or something. I am an abuse survivor, and the thought of some stranger touching me was like a phobia. At one point I couldn’t even read stories of TSA abuses because they would make me feel physically ill. The whole part about private jets and cruises (although those would be awesome) was my way to figure out how I could possibly go without having to deal with the TSA.

Even if I could have made myself go through a TSA line back then, I had no idea how I was going to pay to go to Hawaii. My husband doesn’t like traveling and while he might have paid for me to go, I didn’t know if it would be possible for us. At that time, my own finances weren’t doing too badly but I was later to take a series of financial missteps which put me into serious debt for the first time ever.

And although I had known Tyree since he was in second grade (his younger brother and my sons went to kindergarten together and they lived right around the corner) I didn’t actually know him all that well. So at the time the only thing sending me there was the prospect of hanging out with my friends for a week (which was pretty cool).

But doing the MKMMA forced me to decide WHAT DO I WANT, and I wanted to go to Hawaii. As it turned out, I got a TON more things done in that trip, which I’ll talk about more later. But going to Hawaii was not only something I had wanted to do for a long time, it was the first thing that they were actually able to drag out of me as a specific thing I WANTED TO DO, as opposed to what others might want, stuff for my husband/kids/etc.

Isn’t it weird how women are? LOL

So that gives some context into this photo:

How did I get there? How did I not only go, but have a great time, absolutely zero trouble with airport security, and meet some dear friends along the way?

Well, it’s sort of like Sam’s dilemma. How do you explain nine months of effort, involving danger, fear, and victories? It would be easier for you to look at the information in the tabs above, then take the course and retrain your own subby (plus more fair to those who created it and those who took it) than for me to explain the whole thing. You  also could read what I’ve written so far. But it’s really a change inside which all this guidance, training, and mental effort produced that did it for me, and that’s something which WILL happen if you do the work.

I admit I slacked off some there at the end, but even so it’s been enough to get me through. I have a lot more specific things that I have discovered along the way that I want to do, and I am really excited because I know now that I can do them!

But really it began with the Mental Diet for me. That’s why I keep going on about it. You can save yourself some time and do it now while you’re waiting, instead of waiting until whenever they introduce it after the course starts (which won’t be for a while). But it’s up to you. 🙂

Open to life

I’ve been working my way along, getting all the zillions of things done I need to do before I leave on the 26th … well, it’s not really zillions, but sometimes it feels that way. It’s a whole sheet of paper and I have just three or four things to go (although some are multi-day projects). I’m really astonished at how much I’m able to get done without feeling stressed about it.

The other great thing that’s been happening now is that I’m much better with trying new things. I used to be so afraid to try new things, or I would try (ie. buy) new things which had nothing to do with what I really wanted to do and so were going to cost me money that would end up being wasted.

I’ve taken to heart a quote:

Today I ran across an amazing opportunity doing something that a year ago I would have said no to, even though it’s exactly the sort of thing I need to be doing, because I wouldn’t have thought I was good enough to do it. But today I said YES! and it’s going to be awesome.

(And I even know how to do it! Now it’s just a matter of figuring out the details.)

An opportunity to give without expectation of reciprocity (and even better, there will be a small fee for doing this which will cover my hotel while I’m there, yippee!).

More on that another time.

Here’s another example: I’ve been experimenting with scheduling posts on WordPress, over at my blog The Beautiful Hand, then sending them to Facebook and such. Some are going through with all the photos and links perfect — and others aren’t … no title, no photo, just a shortened link. No one’s going to click on that! It’s sort of a bummer in a way, but it’s still an interesting experiment to see what happens. And it can help my business, and maybe even bring in some cash. Who knows?

I feel as if my whole attitude about these things has changed from fearful to fun, from avoiding life to finding it an adventure.

Oh, I have to share this with you. Remember how my husband was so suspicious of the MKMMA course? Well, the other day he tells me he likes it and gives all these reasons why.

I’m finding this whole thing very exciting.

Something my son said yesterday bugged me: that I was “lucky” to be able to go to Hawaii.

Luck does not come into it at all, and I told him that.

That first week of sits. The process (I was going to write ordeal, but it really wasn’t) of getting my DMP done (actually, I sent in another iteration of it the other day — it’s a work in progress for sure). Sticking to the 7 day mental diet. A hundred little decisions to stop thinking my old crappy way was the best way and let these people help me!

I am going to Hawaii because it was something I have wanted to do for most of my life,  I decided I was going to, and even though I didn’t have the money for it when I decided to do it, it’s all coming together. That is an example of going by intention rather than methods (something taught early on in the course, which is easy to grasp intellectually but more difficult to understand, and I’m only now starting to really be certain of).

I’ve decided to go into the training to be a Certified Guide for the MKMMA class, because I feel like this is something everyone should know about. It’s another process, for sure (!) but it can only help me to be better as a person. I hope you’ll join me the next go round!

Week 24: it really IS all in your mind

Does that sound harsh? That’s because people use the term “It’s all in your mind” to mean that it is not real somehow.

One of my favorite movies is The Matrix. It’s the only movie that I’ve ever rented then immediately went back to the rental store to buy it.

(the lady was confused: “you can rent it again,” she said …)

But I had to buy it. Why? Because even back then it spoke to me in a way no other movie had.

If somehow you have never seen this movie, it’s based on the premise that the current world is not real, but simply a simulation of reality. Why and how this is going on in that movie, I’ll leave for you to watch for yourself.

But the idea that there is something deeper going on than what’s apparent on the surface made a whole lot of sense to me.


In Part 24, Haanel challenges the notion that what we perceive with our senses is necessarily “real”. According to him, if we solely went by our senses, then we would still believe that the world was flat and the sun moved around it.

In other words, our senses don’t tell the entire truth, and when you change your perspective (for example, observing the sun and earth from a spaceship rather than on the ground), the truth of the matter is self-evident.blinds-201173_640

For example, when energy hits our faces at one frequency, we see it as light. When it hits at a different frequency, we instead feel it as warmth. At a different frequency altogether, we can’t see or feel it, but it’s still there — if we have the instruments (which give us a new perspective) to perceive it.

This is important because a lot of people scoff at things they can’t see or immediately understand, simply because they’re unwilling to use the instruments to get that different perspective. Those tools are what this course offers in regards to the basic nature of reality.

Haanel repeats himself yet again, but only (I think) to try to use this one last chance he has to convey what he’s been trying to from Part 1: that our mind controls our reality — not in the sense of “oh if I think good thoughts then everything seems lovely” but rather —

Our environment and the innumerable circumstances and accidents of our lives already exist in the subconscious personality which attracts to itself the mental and physical material which is congenial to its nature. Thus our future being determined from our present, and if there should be apparent injustice in a feature or phase of our personal life, we must look within for the cause, try to discover the mental fact which is responsible for the outward manifestation. (emphasis mine)

What we thought before has created our present; what we think now creates our future. Literally.matrix BulletStop

It’s all in the mind.

In the movie The Matrix, a man who called himself Neo was taught how to think for himself, how to “free” his mind, and in so doing, was not only able to see the truth of his situation, but to do things which the people around him were astonished by.

The truth really did make him free.



Haanel says further:

The difficulty with which you have to contend is to realize that mind is not individual. It is omnipresent. It exists everywhere. In other words, there is no place where it is not. It is therefore, Universal.

Men have, heretofore, generally used the word “God” to indicate this Universal, creative principle; but the word “God” does not convey the right meaning. Most people understand this word to mean something outside of themselves; while exactly the contrary is the fact. It is our very life. Without it we would be dead. We would cease to exist. The minute the spirit leaves the body, we are as nothing.

Your ability to think, your ability to control your thoughts, to direct them to useful rather than destructive purposes, and your realization that your thoughts are merely one tiny part of the Universal Mind, so that what you think here can change your life and the lives of others in places and times you have yet not seen is, Haanel says, the “master key”.

That’s it. But there’s a huge difference between knowing something and understanding it.

It really is all in your mind, and how you choose to use it.

Week 23: real treasure

This has been an interesting week.

Haanel spent the entire chapter talking about money, power, and success.

He begins with the idea of money consciousness. Money consciousness is not what you might think. It is, rather than a grasping attitude, a receptive attitude. Going back to his polarity and circuit examples, he says that desire sets the current in motion, drawing what you need towards you, while fear stops this current and can even reverse it, sending money away from you:

Fear is just the opposite from the money consciousness; it is poverty consciousness, and as the law is unchangeable we get exactly what we give; if we fear, we get what we feared.

I’ve got a lot more work to do on this point. I had to fill out a survey on one of my businesses today, and I felt that sharp spike of fear that I hadn’t felt in weeks, that I had avoided by avoiding the whole topic. But that spike wasn’t as strong, and I now know what it means — that something in this is both vitally important to my growth as a person and being wrongly perceived as danger for some reason — and by reminding myself that I am whole, perfect, strong, powerful, loving, harmonious, and happy, and allowing myself to do more grief work at how things have turned out in that area.

This is one thing I really appreciate about this course, that it has given me the ability to understand and handle emotions, something I never even imagined would happen.

But anyway, he goes on to say:

We make money by making friends,

Another area I haven’t been all that successful in …

and we enlarge our circle of friends by making money for them, by helping them, by being of service to them.

This I find incredibly helpful, because it seems like something I can do, something practical.

The first law of success then is service

I love when he states things plainly like this. He says some other things that I found helpful in this regard:

  • You can make a money magnet of yourself, but to do so you must first consider how you can make money for other people.
  • your greatest success will come as you are enabled to assist others … it is just as essential to give as to get … the more we give, the more we get

He goes on to use several business examples of success through helping others and links this to concentration on the things you desire, including an acquaintance who went from broke to wealthy in just a few years through this method, emphasizing that what he’s writing about is the epitome of “practical”!

“Spirituality” is quite “practical”, intensely “practical.” It teaches that Spirit is the Real Thing, the Whole Thing, and that Matter is but plastic stuff, which Spirit is able to create, mould, manipulate, and fashion to its will. Spirituality is the most “practical” thing in the world — the only really and absolutely “practical” thing that there is!

The webinar talked about self-reliance, and we’re reading Emerson’s essay on self-reliance. I love this:

I cannot sell my liberty and my power, to save their sensibility.

And we got some new cards with things from a book by Deepak Chopra, about acceptance, responsibility, and not defending our position, sort of an extension to the mental diet. I’ve heard of Deepak Chopra before but have never read anything he wrote until now.

And then this from Haanel just jumped out at me:

The average person is entirely innocent of any deep thinking; he accepts the ideas of others, and repeats them, in very much the same way as a parrot; this is readily seen when we understand the method which is used to form public opinion, and this docile attitude on the part of a large majority who seem perfectly wiling to let a few persons do all their thinking for them is what enables a few men in a great many countries to usurp all the avenues of power and hold the millions in subjection.

So how does this all fit together?

I feel as if this week is about treasure.

What is treasure? Is it money, or what money brings you? Or is it something else?

Could the real treasure be … your true calling? Your true self? Letting the crowd do its thing, wishing it well, and taking your own path?

Week 22: mind over matter

I really enjoyed this week’s lesson, but the week seems to be going way too fast! It’s hard to believe it’s Thursday evening already.

This week, Haanel talked about our physical health, and how the mind affects the body. Literally “mind over matter”.

Unfortunately, that term has the connotation of being something either supernatural or something to do with will power.

Now, Haanel REALLY does not like the term “will power” — he went on a rant about it a couple of weeks ago, which I didn’t mention then but I’ll quote him here:

Every time you think you start a train of causation which will create a condition in strict accordance with the quality of the thought which originated it. Thought which is in harmony with the Universal Mind will result in corresponding conditions. Thought which is destructive or discordant will produce corresponding results. You may use thought constructively or destructively, but the immutable law will not allow you to plant a thought of once kind and reap the fruit of another. You are free to use this marvelous creative power as you will, but you must take the consequences.

This is the danger from what is called Will Power. There are those who seem to think that by force of will they can coerce this law; that they can sow seed of one kind and by “Will Power” make it bear fruit of another, but the fundamental principle of creative power is in the Universal, and therefore the idea of forcing a compliance with our wishes by the power of the individual will is an inverted conception which may appear to succeed for a while but is eventually doomed to failure – because it antagonizes the very power which it is seeking to use.

It is the individual attempting to coerce the Universal, the finite in conflict with the Infinite.

Or as the saying goes, “your arms are too short to box with God” 😉

But the term “mind over matter” does have some merit, because your mind really can influence your body. Haanel gives several examples: you hear something funny and your whole body shakes with laughter; you see something sad and you cry; you read something horrible and become angry, your face turning red as the blood flows to your cheeks. According to Haanel, our minds can not only affect our bodies for a short period of time like laughing, but can cause real damage or good to our bodies.

I’m reminded of people who “died of fright” or got terrible news and had a heart attack and died. Now this could be coincidence, or it could be something “real”.

Both seeing this as a former physician and from personal experience, I can tell you that your mind can have a big impact on your body. Not in the “will power” way, but as in holding particular thoughts for long periods of time. People who should have died and are fine, or who should not have died who predicted the day they ended up dying (in one case, I had a patient who seemed fairly well who died exactly one year after her husband did, and she told me that’s when she wanted to go — in another, a woman 20 years ago who had “terminal” brain cancer yet went into complete remission and as far as I know is fine to this day).

And I was labeled as “100% disabled” 15 years ago: I had severe psychiatric problems, fibromyalgia, and arthritis — and one day long ago I decided that my goal in life (my DMP, if you will) was to get well. Every day I thought about this: I want to get well. And other than some lingering memory issues due to the psychiatric problem and a bit of creakiness in the joints, I’m pretty much there.

So I found this statement interesting:

… when perfect images are placed before the subjective, the creative energies will build a perfect body.

In other words, think of what you want, and you’ll get what you want!

Now, this seems worth doing. I’m 52 and have had three children, and my body wouldn’t be considered “perfect” by any means. But this would be a great experiment!

Actually, I began this experiment several months ago, back in week 9, when Haanel said:

It used to be said that man is completely built over every seven years, but some scientists now declare that we build ourselves over entirely every eleven months; so we are really only eleven moths old. If we build the defects back in to our bodies year after year, we nave no one to blame but ourselves.

Wow! That statement hit me like a ton of bricks the first time I read it.

So far all I’ve done for sure is break through a weight loss plateau which had plagued me for the past 2 years, but I have some other changes I’d like to build in as well, if I can, not by “will power”, but by getting my subconscious mind to do it for me. I’ll keep you posted. 😉

 

Week 20: just breathe

Overall this has been a good week.

I liked this week’s lesson quite a bit, and I found it really inspiring.

Here are just a few quotes from the lesson:

Thinking is the true business of life, power is the result…. What results can you expect so long as you remain oblivious to the power which has been placed within your control?

So long as you do this you limit yourself to superficial conditions, and make of yourself a beast of burden for those who think; those who recognize their power; those who know that unless we are willing to think we shall have to work, and the less we think the more we shall have to work, and the less we shall get for our work….

When you begin to perceive that the essence of the Universal is within yourself — is you — you begin to do things; you begin to feel your power ….

This power of thought, if understood and correctly used, is the greatest labor-saving device ever dreamed of ….

Inspiration is the art of receiving and makes for all that is best in life; your business in life is to understand and command these invisible forces instead of letting them command and rule you. Power implies service; inspiration implies power; to understand and apply the method of inspiration is to become a superman. We can live more abundantly every time we breathe, if we consciously breathe with that intention ….

He then talks about something I had never heard of called Pranic Energy (or Pranic Ether). According to Wikipedia, Prana means “life force”, analogous to the Chinese medicine concept of qi, and is “the sum total of all energy that is manifest in the universe”.

Every time we breathe we fill our lungs with air and at the same time vitalize our body with this Pranic Ether which is Life itself, so that we have the opportunity of making a conscious connection with All Life, All Intelligence and All Substance.

The idea is to consciously think about this each time we think about breathing, to associate breathing with our connection to the Universe, as Haanel reminds us yet again:

Each time you think, you start a train of causation which will create a condition in strict accordance with the quality of the thought which originated it.

So it’s best to think, as Haanel puts it, “constructively”, letting go of the negative stuff and focusing on the positive, the things you can do something about, the things which are what you really want, what you’re meant to do in this world.

Week 18: the only hierarchy that matters

I feel like this week I’m finally starting to understand what’s going on in the course.

I laugh just a bit as I write this because it sound so silly to take a course and in week 18 understand what the hell you’re doing. But it’s true … as we have already discussed, there is a huge difference between knowing facts and understanding them.


Haanel talks about the Universal Mind in part 18, and how each living thing is marked by the degree of its intelligence that they manifest:

It is greater intelligence that places the animal in a higher scale of being that the plant, the man higher than the animal, and we find that this increased intelligence is a gain indicated by the power of the individual to control modes of action and thus to consciously adjust himself to his environment.

It is this adjustment that occupies the attention of the greatest minds, and this adjustment consists in nothing else than the recognition of an existing order in the universal mind, for it is well known that this mind will obey us precisely in proportion as we first obey it.

It is the recognition of Natural Laws that has enabled us to annihilate time and space, to soar in the air and to make iron float, and the greater the degree of intelligence the greater will be our recognition of these Natural Laws and the greater will be the power we can possess.

What I get out of this is: recognition of these laws (and tho the universal mind) leads to obedience to them, which leads to power.

At first this struck me as the only hierarchy which makes any sense: the universal mind is clearly greater than we are, so as we recognize that and obey it then we can access the power that it gives us.

Then I thought of an analogy: in every hierarchy, you only have power according to your obedience to the hierarchy itself. If for example you’re a soldier, by yourself you don’t have much power (the US Army’s ads notwithstanding). But if you put yourself into that hierarchy then you have tremendous power at your disposal. Or if you work at McDonald’s, by yourself you aren’t doing much, but you are part of a group feeding more people every day than live in a good-sized country.

For some reason (or perhaps because I wrote about Star Wars last week) I then thought again of good old Luke Skywalker.

Luke was told that if he wanted to be a Jedi, he needs to go to a planet called Dagobah to meet Yoda, who was described as a “great Jedi Master”.

But when he got there, Luke obviously assumed that this “great master” would be tall, big, with strong muscles, and probably human.061

Instead he is accosted by the alien version of a crazy bag lady (flip the gender but that’s basically how Yoda acts).

It’s brilliant on Yoda’s part, because then he gets to see exactly what Luke is like.

Luke almost shoots Yoda, insults him, and then after Yoda invites him to his house and gives him dinner, does nothing but complain.

And ohhhhh the backtracking Luke does when he realizes the person he’s done all this to is the only one who can give him what he’s always wanted in life!

It makes me laugh every time I see that movie.

Luke at first did not recognize this great opportunity he had been given, so instead of honoring and obeying Yoda, he insults and despises him. Until Luke recognized the tremendous power Yoda had access to, and began to obey him instead of insisting on doing everything his own way, Luke couldn’t do anything. But when he did, everything began to change.

But honestly, it wasn’t Yoda who had the power, and he told Luke that. “My power is in the Force,” he said, and it’s a very good analogy.

Haanel goes on to write:

Thought is creative and the principle on which the law is based is sound and legitimate and is inherent in the nature of things; but this creative power does not originate in the individual, but in the universal, which is the source and foundation of all energy and substance; the individual is simply the channel for the distribution of this energy.

Each of us – you, me, everyone – is the individual channel for bringing our thoughts into existence, using the power of the universal mind. What you think about will eventually happen, or something similar.

Do you see now how important your thoughts are?

Do you see that you might need someone to show you how to change them from negative to positive?

It has taken me way longer than 7 days to see it, but I can honestly say things have drastically changed between my ears. 🙂

Week 16: We won the lottery!

Today I realized something: we are the most fortunate beings in existence.

First of all, if you believe in the transmigration of souls, you were fortunate to have been born human. You could possibly (if you believe such things) have been born a cockroach or a scorpion or an elephant.

Secondly, out of all the billions of sperm and millions of eggs that your parents could have provided to create someone, YOU were the combination that happened. What were the odds of that? Not only that, you survived the time in your mother’s womb, you were born into a place and around people that could sustain you in some way until you reached a time where you could take care of yourself, you live in a part of the world where there is literacy and computers (so you could read this), and you’re healthy enough to have the strength to do so.

Not to mention that it is really just as amazing that your parents and all your ancestors back to the dawn of time were born, and survived, so that you could finally be born.

As Og Mandino says: I am nature’s greatest miracle.

But that’s not the truly amazing part. You and I can think, we can reason, and we can imagine. According to Haanel, these three things separate us from all the other species currently on this planet. (remember, this was written in 1914) and is what makes us human.

Why?

Thought connects us with the Universal Mind, and imagination produces pictures of what we want (or don’t want), which set our subby (who doesn’t know the difference) into motion to create these things for us. Through our reason, we can have insight into what the most beneficial things are to imagine, what the consequences might be, and with the help of our subby, create plans of action.

Thought is creative, Haanel constantly says, yet he also says that through our reason we can control our thoughts, and what we imagine, and in so doing get hold of the the power of the Universal Mind for our good and the good of the world, rather than what he calls “mental chaos” — which was certainly my state before starting this course.

But that’s not the best part.

Want to know the best part?

We already won.

That’s what I figured out today during my sit: I already am “whole, perfect, strong, powerful, loving, harmonious, and happy”. I already have my PPN’s, True Health and Liberty. I just have not up to now accepted that and let go of what I don’t need anymore: the idea that I am somehow defective, the negativity, the fear, and so on.

I have the abundance of the entire Universe at my disposal.

I can do or be anything I choose to do or be, go anywhere in any manner I choose to.

I can reshape my body into whatever I want.

I already help others, and I already receive recognition for my work.

I ALREADY WON THE LOTTERY. And so did you. We just need to do what it takes to get the cash. 😉

This is not some zero-sum game, like the real lottery, where to win 110 million then 110 million people (or more) have to lose a buck. The Universe has boundless abundance in every category, more than all seven plus billion people in the world could ever think of using.

This is the sad part. It’s like if you lived in a hovel, never knowing that you were Bill Gates’ heir, that he had a billion dollar trust fund for you since you were 18, but when the postman comes to the door to deliver the papers and asks you to sign for them, you shut the door in his face over and over and over again, because you think it’s a scam.

So how do you get this wealth?

Remember the three things you have: the ability to think, the ability to imagine, and the ability to reason. Before anything else can happen, you have to change your thoughts. Thus, the mental diet. 🙂

Week 15: growth and decay

This has been an emotional week for me. I haven’t yet figured out why. But the things we’ve been learning have affected me profoundly over the past few days. This quote affected me most of all:

Difficulties, inharmonies, and obstacles, indicate that we are either refusing to give out what we no longer need, or refusing to accept what we require.

I’ve come to the conclusion that in my case it’s been a little of both.


 

This week’s reading focuses quite a bit on the idea of exchanging old ways for new ones. The New Year has a lot of people trying to exchange old ways of doing things for new, mostly through the use of resolutions. I’ve never found resolutions to be very useful, mainly because you’re working on changing the outside (the effect) rather than the inside (the cause). The problem seems to be that people try to get new things without letting go of the old way of thinking, but:

We cannot obtain what we lack if we tenaciously cling to what we have.

Sounds a bit like the mental version of Hoarders: people bursting with limiting and negative thoughts, unwilling to let go of them so they have room for the good things that they claim they want so desperately. But:

All conditions and experiences that come to us do so for our benefit. Difficulties and obstacles will continue to come until we absorb their wisdom and gather from them the essentials of further growth.

That we reap what we sow is mathematically exact. We gain permanent strength exactly to the extent of the effort required to overcome difficulties.

This was a bit daunting at first, but at the same time makes a lot of sense.

Haanel then goes on to talk about thought, how emotion brings life to thought and enables it to manifest into form, first by creating words (reproducing the thought to others “in the form of sound”) then eventually with action:

… whatever the action, it is simply the thought attempting to express itself in visible form. It is evident, therefore, that if we wish desirable conditions, we can afford to entertain only desirable thoughts.

This leads to the inevitable conclusion that if we wish to express abundance in our lives, we can afford to think abundance only, and as words are only thoughts taking form, we must be especially careful to use nothing but constructive and harmonious language, which when finally crystallized into objective forms, will prove to our advantage.

He goes on to talk more about words and the value of crafting your words exactly, which leads, of course, back to our old friend the Mental Diet, which helps us to craft our thoughts more exactly. He says something which I found interesting, and at first, baffling:

There is a principle of Mathematics, but none of error; there is a principle of health, but none of disease; there is a principle of truth, but none of dishonesty; there is a principle of light, but none of darkness, and there is a principle of abundance, but none of poverty.

How shall we know that this is true? Because if we apply the principle of Mathematics correctly we shall be certain of our results. Where there is health there will be no disease. If we know the Truth we cannot be deceived by error. If we let in light there can be no darkness, and where there is abundance there can be no poverty.

These are self-evident facts, but the all-important truth that a thought containing principle is vital and therefore contains life and consequently takes root, and eventually but surely and certainly displaces the negative thoughts, which by their very nature can contain no vitality, is one which seems to have been over looked.

This section puzzled me for quite some time, especially the last bit. It seemed to me that the whole course so far had been making the case that negative thoughts were quite vital, seeing as we put a great deal of emotion into them.

But then it dawned on me that what he’s talking about is growth and decay, energy and entropy. The “principle” he is talking about is another way to say that math works one way, but there are a zillion ways to make a math mistake. Health looks a certain way, where disease has all sorts of manifestations. You tell the truth one way, but you could be dishonest any number of ways, and so on. Something in the “Q & A” section really helped me with this:

We do not have to laboriously shovel the darkness out; all that is necessary is to turn on the light.

In other words, things with “principle”, as he puts it, lead to growth, energy, constructive action. Things without lead to decay, entropy, destruction.

This week, we have been thinking about insight, and beginning to apply the things we have learned to the problems that lie before us, which I find really exciting. 🙂
